The two new arcades were produced following a rigorous study of the key elements that were used in Victorian architecture and have been lost in modern shopping mall design. The exterior facades, the roof and the interior spaces are all part of an holistic design approach that reinstates a high-quality shopping environment that works as a series of civic spaces, combing the best of the past with new technologies. The rhythm of this building and the proportioning of materials is taken from the design principles established by Si Reginald Blomfield in the 1920s but reinterpreted for the 21st century.

The roof of the new arcades creates two covered streets below, filled with natural day light from above. Offering uninterrupted views to the John Lewis store from both outside and in, the structure is an interlocking steel grid shell, which is strong and delicate simultaneously. This configuration allows for the creation of sculptural moments, such as the ‘light funnel’ in the north arcade that draws the structure up in on itself, while pulling light down at the same time. At the point where the north and south arcades meet and adjoin the front of the John Lewis store, a huge daylit public space has been created with a canopy of steel and glass floating 22 metres above the ground.

Internally, the arcades are lined with elegant curved glass shop fronts that also echo their Victorian predecessors, while a stone floor is made up of 13 different types of granite, arranged in a herringbone arrangement, inspired by traditional cloth patterns. Windows, doorways and materials have all been designed with care to form an overall design vision which celebrates the historic use of the superior materials and finishes. A discrete and consistent approach to shop signage ensures that the shops and spaces in between them retain a cool elegance that draws on classic design elements rather than contemporary trends.

The Victoria Gate Arcades sit in between the historical Victoria Quarters to the west and the new John Lewis Store to the east, with the prominent Eastgate quarter to the north and the Kirkgate Market to the south. In-depth research into the look and feel of the neighboring buildings revealed a huge range of varying aesthetics and proportions that the arcade exterior must address while retaining is own identity. The three dimensional pleated brick facade designed by ACME creates a multitude of shadows and depth across the building and is the product of 360,000 individually drawn and located bricks. This immense and complex operation was made possible through the collaboration of all partners using BIM software Revit and compatible 3-D modelling and manufacturing software. The final outcome appears almost pixelated and demonstrates an innovative use of traditional building materials.

INTERNAL SHOP FRONT
The arcades’ shop fronts are designed as a modular and repetitive element consistently repeated to create a unified identity for the centre. This is key for the entire project and one of the most distinctive aspects that sets it apart from a typical shopping centre. Design consistency and unity of architectural elements delivers a contemporary reinterpretation of the Victorian arcades concept. While retaining the quality that makes historical arcades still special today, the project endeavours to be truly contemporary and relevant to the future of shopping as an experience where architecture plays a key role in place making.

The steel structure and glazed panels of the roof was modelled by Acme in 3D. We then worked with the manufacturer and installer, Seele, to optimise the design to eliminate any warped or curved panels. The laminated glazing has a 50% black ceramic frit to reduce insulation, and make the Leeds sky look a little more blue than it normally is. The dramatic form of the roof forms ridges and valleys, referencing the roofs of the adjacent Victorian arcades, and sweeps up to meet the diagrid structure of the John Lewis facade. As it passes under the casino above, the roof changes to a lit ceiling and then rises to a top-lit funnel, providing daylight to the north arcade.

LIGHT PENDANT
Bespoke-designed pendant lights punctuate both the north and south arcades. Acme worked with specialist Italian lighting manufacturers to develop the design of the pendants so that they met our design vision and provided the correct lux levels and emergency lighting for the arcades. The design has been developed following the principles of the arcades design language with a reference to the iconic Yorkshire Rose.

The arcades floor fades from dark to light in a herringbone pattern, reflecting the traditional cloth manufacturing industry of Leeds. The deceptively complex pattern is made from 13 types of granite. Marshalls supplied the granite from sources in China that were sufficiently abundant, and consistent in quality and colour. The whole of the floor was dry laid and inspected in China, then packed and shipped to the UK. Expansion joints throughout were co-ordinated with the zigzag joints between granite tiles, so that they disappeared, leaving just three main contraction joints visible.

SPIRAL STAIRCASE
Providing access to the southern rooftop restaurants, first floor customer services and second floor management suite, a spiral stair rises through a void from ground to roof level. A steel base structure formed off-site spans between floor slabs, and the granite treads and risers were formed in-situ. Stained oak fins form an enveloping wall cladding which was carefully set out to achieve continuous flush faces and a consistent rhythm from the ground to the third floor.
